Former Liberian Traditional Council Chairman Chief Zanzan Karwor Speaks from Sickbed After Leg Amputation

Family appeals for support as political ally alleges medical malpractice and “state neglect” in the wake of the former chief’s declining health.

MONROVIA, Liberia — Chief Zanzan Karwor, the former Chairman of Liberia’s National Traditional Council who served under two successive presidents, is battling serious health complications after the amputation of his leg.

Karwor, a prominent traditional leader from Grand Bassa County, led the National Traditional Council from 2006 until early August 2024, when his tenure ended following a democratic transition. During his time in office, he worked under former Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Manneh Weah, playing a key role in representing traditional chiefs and elders across the country.

Now speaking from his sickbed at a local clinic in Monrovia, the once influential traditional leader is facing a new reality after doctors at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFK) reportedly amputated his leg due to complications arising from diabetes.

His family has launched an appeal for financial and medical assistance as his condition continues to deteriorate.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND), Mulbah K. Morlu, who recently visited Karwor, has attributed the amputation to alleged medical malpractice and what he described as “state neglect.” Health authorities have not publicly responded to the allegations.

Karwor’s amputation marks a dramatic turn for a man who, for nearly two decades, stood at the helm of Liberia’s traditional leadership structure. He is now expected to undergo a long period of recovery and adjustment following the life-altering procedure.
