The groundbreaking of a new Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) building and satellite system by the Chinese state-owned company China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) marks a significant step in improving Liberia’s media infrastructure. This initiative comes as part of a commitment made during President Joseph Boakai’s recent visit to China, where President Xi Jinping pledged support to enhance Liberia’s national broadcasting capabilities.
The project will span approximately 1,500 m² with a modern construction area of 944.57 m². Key features include the provision of a broadcast vehicle and the installation of an advanced satellite transmission system. Additionally, the satellite ground station and towers in Monrovia will undergo upgrades to improve media accessibility. Once completed, the upgraded system will extend broadcasting services to all 15 counties in Liberia, significantly enhancing access to news, information, and educational content nationwide.
This development aligns with China’s growing influence in Africa, providing infrastructural investments as part of broader cooperation initiatives. For Liberia, the project holds the promise of expanding public communication services, promoting transparency, and strengthening the country’s media landscape.
