Saudi Arabia Pledges Up to $49 Million for Northern Liberia Power Corridor

A Saudi Arabian delegation led by Liberia’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Amara S. Sackor, has committed up to US$49 million toward the expansion of Liberia’s electricity transmission network, targeting the Botota–Voinjama–Mendikorma corridor, according to officials.

The commitment emerged from high-level discussions on Tuesday between the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), following months of diplomatic engagement spearheaded by Ambassador Sackor. The Saudi delegation was headed by Mr. Abdulrahman Bin Ahujaa Al-Habri.

LEC Managing Director Mohammed Sherif presented a comprehensive technical and financial overview of the project, which spans approximately 605 kilometers and is designed to extend power from the Botota CLSG Sub-Station through Voinjama to Mendikorma. The total cost of the project is estimated at US$190 million.

Sherif described the corridor as a critical component of Liberia’s national energy strategy, noting that it will significantly expand transmission capacity in northern Liberia, enhance electricity access in Bong and Lofa counties, support local businesses, and stimulate cross-border trade. He added that the Saudi Fund’s proposed financing remains subject to final technical and feasibility assessments.

Ambassador Sackor underscored the role of sustained diplomacy in mobilizing development finance, praising LEC’s technical leadership and emphasizing that the project demonstrates how international partnerships can translate into concrete infrastructure gains for Liberia.

Mr. Al-Habri reaffirmed the Saudi Fund for Development’s interest in supporting high-impact energy projects, commending both Ambassador Sackor and LEC for their coordination and commitment to expanding access to electricity.
