In recent years, Liberian nationals here in the US have been setting their eyes on some crucial US city council and mayoral positions, and winning, too. I’m talking about the mayors of Helena, Montana and Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, Wilmot Collins and Mike Elliot respectively, but that’s not all – a very young, vibrant Liberian is also vying for a city council seat in Falcon Heights, a suburb of Saint Paul and a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, with an estimated population of about 5,321 diversified people. His name is Yakasah Wehyee.

He and his family fled the onset of the Liberian civil war, had a brief stay in neighboring Ivory Coast, then migrated to the United States, where young Yakasah went to both high school and college, earning a political science degree, coupled with years of being heavily involved in community service programs.

Minnesota’s Falcon Heights Council members and the mayor are elected to four year terms, and if Yakasah wins a seat this year, he could really use the opportunity to build for himself and the Liberian community an impressive legacy. All the best, sir!
